Strong export sectors

These are the sectors that accounted for the majority (>70%) of Vietnam's export value (2016). Let's explore the strong export sectors of 2016.

1. Phones and components

This is Vietnam's largest export category, valued at approximately $34,32 billion, a 13,8% increase compared to the same period last year.

The main markets importing mobile phones from Vietnam in 2016 included the EU market with a turnover of nearly US$11,24 billion, an increase of 11,1% compared to the same period of the previous year; the US market with a turnover of over US$4,3 billion, an increase of 55,5%; the United Arab Emirates with a turnover of US$3,83 billion, a decrease of 14,5%; and the ASEAN market with nearly US$2,27 billion, an increase of 6,2%…

2. Textiles and clothing

Textile and garment exports for the whole year of 2016 reached over 23,84 billion USD, an increase of 4,6% compared to the same period of the previous year.

The largest import market for Vietnamese textiles and garments is the US, with a turnover of over $11,45 billion, an increase of 4,6% compared to the same period last year; followed by the EU market with a turnover of over $3,56 billion, an increase of 2,7%; and the Japanese market with a turnover of over $2,9 billion, an increase of 4,2%…

3. Computers, electronic products and components

Exports of this product group reached US$18,96 billion in 2016, an increase of 21,5% compared to the previous year, equivalent to an increase of US$3,35 billion.

China was Vietnam's largest importer of this product group this year, with $4,1 billion, up 47,2%; followed by the EU with $3,73 billion, up 16,5%; the US with $2,89 billion, up 2,05%; and the Netherlands with $1,75 billion, a sharp increase of 53,5%… compared to the previous year.

4. Footwear

Exports for this product group totaled $13 billion for the year, an increase of 8,3% compared to the previous year.

Exports of all types of footwear to the US reached $4,48 billion, an increase of nearly 10%; to the EU reached $4,22 billion, an increase of 3,51%; and to China reached $905 million, an increase of 20%… compared to 2015.

5. Machinery, equipment, and tools

The total import value of this product group for the year reached over $10,14 billion, an increase of 24,3% compared to the same period last year.

Machinery, equipment, tools, and other spare parts from Vietnam are mainly exported to the US with a turnover of nearly 2,13 billion USD, an increase of 27,2%; Japan with over 1,56 billion USD, an increase of 10,9%; and the EU market (28 countries) with over 1,29 billion USD, an increase of 29,4%…

6. Fisheries

The total export value of this product group for the year reached $7,05 billion, an increase of 7,4%, equivalent to an increase of $484 million compared to the previous year.

Seafood exports were mainly directed to the US, reaching $1,44 billion (up 9,7%); to the EU, reaching $1,2 billion (up 3,6%); to Japan, reaching $1,1 billion (up 6,2%); and to China, reaching $685 million (up 53%).

7. Wood and wood products

The group's total export turnover for the year reached nearly $6,97 billion, an increase of 1,1% compared to the same period last year.

In 2016, wood and wood products exports mainly went to: the US market with a turnover of nearly US$2,83 billion, an increase of 7% compared to the same period of the previous year; the Chinese market with a turnover of over US$1,02 billion, an increase of 4,7%; and the Japanese market with US$981 million, a decrease of 5,9%…

8. Agricultural products (fruits and vegetables, cashews, coffee, tea, pepper, rice)

Despite a sharp decline in rice exports, the export value of this commodity group in 2016 still reached over $12,45 billion, an increase of 16,2% compared to the same period.

In 2016, the main import markets for Vietnamese agricultural products were China with nearly $3,13 billion, an increase of 50,4%; the EU market with over $2,59 billion, an increase of 16,2%; and the US with over $1,87 billion, an increase of 25,2% compared to the same period.

9. Transportation vehicles and spare parts

Despite a decrease in export turnover in December, the total for the year still reached $6,05 billion, a slight increase of 3,7% compared to the previous year. Exports from this group were mainly carried out by FDI enterprises.

10. Handbags, suitcases, hats, umbrellas

This product group brought in over $3,16 billion for Vietnam in 2016, a 10,2% increase compared to the previous year. The main export markets are the US and the EU.
