Employee trust is the key to a manager's success.

No leader can succeed without building trust with their employees. What do you need to do to gain the trust of your employees?

A common trend is that employees and leaders often have little trust in each other. Employees tend to think their bosses exploit their labor, while bosses think employees use the company for personal gain.

These antagonistic relationships are often exaggerated, but that doesn't mean feelings of distrust aren't real. The responsibility for building trust lies with the leader, as they are the ones who need to control the work environment.

Here are six proven ways you can build employee trust within your company.

1. Show that you are also a working professional.

As a leader, you don't need to be perfect. Employees know you make mistakes, and they won't mind unless you deny that you don't. Let your employees see that you're just an ordinary person, and that you handle difficult situations just like everyone else. Employees will see themselves in your actions, and they'll be more confident in correcting their mistakes when they do.

2. Attentive care

Employees are ordinary individuals with their own lives and many other aspects of their lives beyond what you see at work. Don't judge employees negatively for things that aren't part of their work schedule. Show genuine care for them and the world around them.

3. Tell the truth

Just one lie can completely destroy employee trust. The truth often hurts, but even if it's kept hidden, it will eventually come to light. If you don't trust your employees, they won't trust you either. Maintain an open environment, and with persistence, you will earn their trust and respect.

4. Managing the company based on employee capabilities.

Everyone wants their work to be appreciated. If you promote employees based on connections, you're indirectly telling them they don't need to try. You must establish reward and promotion standards based on employee competence to build trust and support their holistic development.

5. Listen to feedback from employees.

If employees feel they have no voice in the company, they will lose trust in their leaders. Create a system where employees can share their opinions. Even if you can't implement their suggestions, you should still let them know that their feedback has been received and that they have been heard.

6. Be generous.

Generosity shows that you are giving a lot of yourself. Show your employees that you value them by taking the time to eat with them, showing them your attention, sharing your experiences, your concerns, and above all, showing appreciation.
