1. Inappropriate attire
Always dress smartly and neatly. Never dress too conspicuously or so different from your potential clients that your appearance seems out of place. Things to avoid:
- Excessive use of jewelry.
- Revealing (sexy) clothing.
2. Exaggeration
Of course, we're very enthusiastic about our products, services, and company. But customers aren't fools. They can point out the difference between the imagined and the reality. Comments like "Our products are never returned" can be better expressed as "We have a 2% return rate." And "To date, we are the best" can be better expressed as "We are ranked among the top 2% of companies in the industry by AC Nielsen."
3. Pressure tactics
Rushing to sell is a sign of desperation. It shows us:
- Ignoring the needs of potential customers and focusing solely on one's own needs;
- Lack of empathy for the customer's situation;
- They are trying to cover up the weaknesses in their sales pitch.
4. Lack of attention
Talking endlessly is a sure way to lose customers, because we're not finding out what they need. Instead, find out what your customers need, or find a customer whose needs match your product or service.
5. Harassment
People hate being relentlessly pursued. They feel cornered. If we manage to sell something quickly, we'll find that the order is small, and people just want to get away from us. Then, we'll find it much harder to secure a large order.
6. Deceiving customers
Getting orders from customers is difficult, so complaining to them is a death knell. Confusing someone will only create resentment, and customers will turn their backs on you forever.
7. Unreliable
We must always keep our promises. We must fulfill everything we have committed to.
8. Too much information
Information overload is the process of listing all the features of a sales pitch before we even consider their needs. This is a major kill signal. Selling is the art of identifying needs by gathering information through questioning and listening.
9. Arrogance
Sometimes, success comes to someone. When that happens, that person becomes overly arrogant, boastful, and inflated. No one can tolerate arrogance, and it will soon lead to strained relationships and cause business and sales to plummet.
