Research by Fecllity Stevens and Mark Di Somma – two consultants specializing in branding, strategic marketing, and communication – indicates that up to 70% of employees in businesses are unhappy at work or that company culture is weakened due to two main reasons.
Firstly, employees feel undervalued and disrespected, seen only as tools or resources for the company. Secondly, they feel compelled to work in a lifeless cultural environment.
Below are some signs that indicate a weakening corporate culture is negatively impacting the entire organization.
1. EMPLOYEES ARE UNAWARE OF THE BUSINESS'S FUTURE.
Regardless of their position, employees struggle to work with enthusiasm, positivity, and creativity if they don't know where the company is headed. Instead, they simply accept the status quo, causing the business to stagnate. To overcome this, business leaders must regularly update their employees with the following information:
- What goals will the business aim for?
- How can we achieve those goals?
- What role will each employee play in achieving the goals?
- How can we know if a business has achieved its goals?
2. EMPLOYEES HAVE DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS FOR TASKS.
This is a case where each employee thinks about and interprets the organization's principles and regulations in their own way. When asked why, they simply reply that they are allowed to do so. The problem here is that employees lack guidance and control from senior management.
3. LACK OF MUTUAL TRUST BETWEEN MANAGERS AND EMPLOYEES
The root cause is often a hierarchical, vertical management system. Managers view leadership as the exercise of power, while employees see managers as "enemies." Another reason is the lack of fairness in rewards, or worse, the distribution of company benefits heavily skewed towards the interests of managers. Furthermore, employee distrust often stems from the fact that companies treat them like "second-class citizens." It's important to note that while customers can be found again, talented and loyal employees are often gone forever.
4. EMPLOYEES ARE REQUIRED TO FOLLOW UNEXPECTED AND INFLUENTIAL PLANS.
They are suddenly informed of certain plans without explanation, some of which are completely contrary to what they were told just a short time ago. When treated like this, employees are unable to work proactively and creatively, and simply let things happen as they may.
5. Numerous inaccurate rumors have emerged.
When internal information intended for all employees is not provided to them openly, fully, and promptly, rumors will spread, causing unforeseen damage and disruption to the organization.
6. EMPLOYEES FEEL THAT THE COMPANY'S IMAGE IS NOT BEING PROMOTED ADEQUATELY AND ACCURATELY.
When working for an organization, employees feel that their personal image is also linked to the organization's image. Therefore, if the company's image is not accurately portrayed to the public, employees will feel dissatisfied. When employees complain that advertising campaigns and programs do not reflect who the company is, it can be due to various reasons, such as the advertising company not understanding the company and its requirements, the timing of the advertising being inappropriate, or employees not fully understanding the intentions of the advertising campaigns, etc.
7. EMPLOYEES ARE NOT IMPRESSED BY THE SENIOR MANAGERS.
This is when senior business leaders, whether intentionally or unintentionally, create a distance between themselves and their employees. A business only has a strong culture that fosters employee cohesion when senior executives understand that their role is not just to bring material benefits to the company, but also to attract and persuade employees.
8. EMPLOYEES SHOW DISSATISFACTION WITH MIDDLE MANAGERS
They feel that middle managers are like "colonial rulers." The main reason is often that middle managers don't receive proper guidance from senior managers, or worse, they simply follow the way senior managers have treated them.
