Besides competence, soft skills also play a crucial role in determining whether your job will be successful or not. Therefore, developing and improving soft skills is also a way to climb the ladder of success.
A 2008 survey of over 2.000 businesses in Washington state revealed that soft skills are the best way to describe your abilities and work techniques. Experts agree that soft skills account for 60% of your success at work. Below are six essential skills for everyone, especially office workers.
1. Communication skills
Good communication doesn't mean you have to be an excellent orator or a great writer. Nor does it mean you have to present yourself perfectly in front of others. Communication skills are demonstrated by how you persuade others and the results you achieve. Remember, communication is like writing a report; it requires consistency, persuasive content, and a calm, confident demeanor (from your attire and hairstyle to your gait and how you interact with those around you). Furthermore, patiently explaining things to other team members is also a way to hone your communication skills.
2. Cooperation and teamwork
Lynne Sarikas, director of the MBA Career Center at Northeastern University, USA, shared: “Managers always want their employees to have good relationships with each other because this increases work efficiency. Therefore, one of the essential soft skills that office workers should cultivate is collaboration and teamwork. Successful collaboration and teamwork must be based on the principles of equality, respect, and consensus.”
3. Adaptability
Adaptability is a particularly important skill for those who want to reach a professional level. When you work professionally, you can easily adapt to any environmental conditions as well as any changes in the job: "To succeed in any organization, you need passion, ambition, and a continuous development of skills to be able to adapt to the different needs of the organization," Mr. Sakiras further shared.
4. Problem-solving skills
“Always be prepared for any unforeseen circumstances that may arise during your work. Think about the time it takes you to solve a problem, how you approach it, how you solve it, and the outcome. In reality, your problem-solving skills are measured by the results you achieve,” shared Ann Spoor, managing director of the Cave Creek center.
5. Observation skills
Observation skills encompass not only the ability to observe but also the ability to analyze and interpret. When you receive any information or data, you need to ask yourself questions like: “What is the problem here? What does this information tell us?” And try to explain or find the most appropriate answers possible.
6. Conflict Resolution
The ability to persuade, negotiate, and resolve conflicts is crucial if you want to advance in your career. According to Mr. Sarikas: “You need the skills to develop relationships that benefit your company, persuade clients, negotiate reasonable solutions, and resolve personal conflicts… When you can resolve conflicts, you are gradually developing your management qualities, helping to harmonize relationships. This contributes significantly to your future success…”
To develop soft skills, you can participate in skills training courses at various colleges, universities, or academies in the country. These courses will help you improve your communication skills, teamwork, cultural understanding, customer psychology, conflict resolution, and leadership skills, among others. Additionally, you can seek mentorship or volunteer for non-profit organizations; these are excellent opportunities to hone and enhance the soft skills necessary for your future career.
